Fray World Game Jam

Welcome to the First Annual FRAY World Game Jam!  After the smashing success of the live FRAY Show in London in June in which two brothers, Tullio and Ziya enter a game jam contest together, we’re bringing a 48-hour game jam to you in real life!  Jump into the creative world of FRAY and get ready to JAM with us, online or in person in London for this weekend-long, music-inspired contest.

People of all skill sets and experience levels are welcome.

Join the conversation on our Discord.  Want to join a team with other developers, or are you new to the game jam experience?  Find team members virtually or ones to meet up with in person here too!

We’ll be hosting a workshop for beginners on Saturday, Nov. 2 in conjunction with Mayamada.  Families are welcome!  Check back soon for more details.

JAM RULES

Theme of Jam

The theme will be revealed when the game jam opens:  Friday, November 1, 6:00 PM, UK.

In Person Jam Location:

62 Wood Lane London W12 7RH United Kingdom

Submission Window

The game jam will open at  6:00 pm on Friday, November 1st and game submissions are due by 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024.  All times are UK.

Jammers will receive free admission to a live FRAY Dance Battle event from 6 - 9:00 pm Sunday November 3rd while awaiting the judge’s decision on jam winners.

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate in the jam. We strongly encourage participation from marginalized creators. No previous game development experience is required.

You may work alone or on a team. If you're under the age of 13, a parent or guardian should upload the game.

There is no limit on the number of people per team, and you may be on multiple teams, however, please know your limit!

How do I submit?

You must upload a digital game to itch.io, which is playable by someone using a Windows PC. Your game should not require additional hardware or software to run.  The game should be suitable for a general audience, so we recommend you avoid strong language and excessive gore.

Your game should not contain nudity, or hateful language or visuals.

The itch upload limit is 1GB. You can compress your game as a ZIP file if needed.

Generative AI (such as Midjourney, ChatGPT, or Github Copilot) is not permitted to create any assets or code.

Need more information?

  • You may use pre-existing code and can use whatever art and audio assets you have the legal right to use, but you shouldn't make stuff ahead of time that is specifically for this jam.

We ask that you do not use generative AI (such as Midjourney, ChatGPT, or Github Copilot) to create any assets or code.

You can use pre-existing code, libraries, and functions, and make use of generic code for things like menus or input. You can also create things like a blank Unity project, a Github page, or your itch.io profile in advance to save time.

You can use pre-existing sprites, textures, fonts, models, shaders, animations, sound effects, and music - including public domain assets, assets you have purchased, assets you have made yourself, or assets that are (legally-acceptable) derivative works of existing media.

You should credit all external art and audio in your game description.

    Game Engine:

You may use any game engine, as long as you can export a file that can be uploaded to itch. We recommend Unity, Godot, and Game Maker.

You can support controllers and other peripherals, as long as keyboard or mouse also works. And you can upload builds for Mac, Linux, Android, etc, as long as you also have a Windows or browser version.

You should not require the user to download additional software from external sources. If your game requires additional files (like DLLs) they should be included in the download and not require separate installation.

The itch upload limit is 1GB. You can compress your game as a ZIP, RAR, or 7Zip file (ZIP is preferred). You can also upload larger files via Butler if you really need to.

You can have online features like multiplayer servers and leaderboards - but files hosted outside of itch.io must not be modified or updated during the jam period - with the only exception being to ensure compliance with itch.io rules (i.e. removing a rulebreaking leaderboard name).

Once the rating period is over, you're free to update your game however you please, charge for it, release it on other platforms - the game is yours, do what you wish with it.

Thank you Mark Brown of GMTK Game Jam for the following amazing list of resources where you can find art, fonts, music, and sound effects for your games.

Many of the assets are eligible for use in the jam but check the license before using and provide credit in your game’s description!
